Youth Pitched Skatepark Idea in Fort McMurray Alberta

News of a youth led initiative for a skatepark here:

Fort McMurray opens skatepark pitched by local students

When a group of Grade 5 and 6 students in Fort McMurray, Alta., told Mayor Sandy Bowman they had nothing to do in their neighbourhood, he challenged them to bring a solution to council.

More than three years later, some of those same students stood on the grounds of their old school to cut the ribbon on a brand-new skatepark. Their teachers say they hope the skatepark’s story will inspire kids to become active in their communities.

“I didn’t even think that this was gonna happen when we were in Grade 5,” Brianna Doerksen, one of the students that lobbied for the skatepark, said at the opening ceremony on Tuesday.

“It shows you that all you gotta do is make your voice heard and then you can get anything done.
